YMS girls basketball team beats Osceola

OKEECHOBEE — Yearling’s team defense smothered the Osceola attack and led to several easy basket opportunities Tuesday as the Lady Bulls swept the season series from the Lady Warriors, 26-10, in front of 175 fans at Okeechobee High School.

Janel Aponte had nine points, eight steals and six rebounds, and Simone Washington had eight points, eight rebounds and five steals for YMS.

Osceola was held to only two points in the first half and couldn’t get their offense going.

Yearling coach Erin Morrow said she wanted her girls to play strong defense because often that will lead to turnovers and easy baskets on offense.

“I told the girls that there will be distractions. It’s an exciting day playing your rival and the girls did such a good job of staying focused. They talked to each other and paid attention to the game all day,” she added.

Yearling led 5-2 at the end of the first quarter and 10-2 at the half. They opened up a double-digit lead early in the third quarter and were never threatened after that.

Aponte played a big part in Yearling’s success early. She had four steals in the first quarter alone.

“I felt like it was an amazing experience and pretty fun,” she noted afterward.

“My game plan was to play good defense and try to get the ball in the hoop.”

Brook Julian had six steals and three points for Osceola. LaFasia Smith added four points, three steals and six rebounds.

Tyeika Byrd had eight rebounds and four points, and Adryauna Baker had five rebounds, six steals and four points for the Bulls.

Coach Morrow said her girls have shown a lot of growth this year because they listen well and try to apply the things they learn in practice.

“Janel did a great job disrupting Osceola. She was just a human wall on defense. She moved her feet and got steals without fouls. She just plays good defense in a good position,” she said.

Aponte said while she likes basketball, she also likes to play soccer, and wants to continue to play several sports when she moves to high school next year.

“My team was very excited that they got this win today. When it comes to sports, I’m very busy and I’m well rounded,” she added.

Ariana Arnold had five rebounds and Taylor Gibson had one point and four rebounds for Yearling. Joy Whipple had one point and three rebounds, Piper Hans two points and two rebounds, and Ana Koivunen three steals and four rebounds for OMS.
