Truck driver killed in fiery crash on U.S. 441 N. in Okeechobee

OKEECHOBEE — A Kissimmee man was killed early Thursday morning in a single-vehicle accident on U.S. 441 N., just south of N.E. 131st Lane.

A Florida Highway Patrol press release indicated Oscar Armando Medrano, 51, died at the scene of the 4:22 a.m. crash. Because of the fiery crash, that highway remained closed to through traffic until Thursday afternoon.

According to the release, Mr. Medrano was driving a 2009 International tractor-trailer and was southbound on the two-lane highway. For unknown reasons, the big rig left the roadway on the east shoulder and struck a tree.

The rig then overturned and burst into flames.

It is not known if the driver was wearing his seat belt, or if the crash was alcohol related.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation by FHP Trooper Corporal Mark Zook, who is handling the crash and homicide investigation.
