MOORE HAVEN — As plans continue for Guy Harvey Outpoast to take over Okee-Tantie, the operation may also include a presence in Glades County.
At the Tuesday, Nov. 10, meeting of the Glades County Board of Commissioners in Moore Haven, Glades County Manager Paul Carlisle reported that he met with Mark Ellert of the Guy Harvey Outpost in October to discuss Indian Prairie Canal. He said they discussed the option of putting in an airboat launch site at the end of the canal.
Mr. Carlisle said the Guy Harvey Outpost representatives are supportive of the idea and indicated a willingness to manage the primitive campground on the property.
Currently, only the boat ramp is open and the campground area is closed.
Mr. Carlisle said Guy Harvey might also be interested in airboat tours out of Indian Prairie Canal.
The county would have to sit down with the US Army Corps of Engineers to discuss a lease and find out what they might be allowed to do on the property, he explained.
Glades County ran the campground in an agreement with South Florida Water Management District several years ago. At that time, SFWMD provided a stipend for the county to offset costs. When the district no longer agreed to the stipend, the county stopped operating the campground.
Mr. Carlisle said an airboat ramp at the Alvin Ward Boat ramp in Moore Haven should be open soon, in time for duck hunting season.
