Orlando MegaCon under way this weekend

ORLANDO — Thousands of science fiction, fantasy, anime, gaming and comic book fans are gathering at the Orange County Convention Center this weekend for MegaCon.

Shatner

William Shatner is a popular guest at MegaCon.

The annual convention is bigger than ever this year, expanding the event to four days and a larger space at the convention center.  The most popular events — such as programs by comic book legend Stan Lee, Star Trek’s William Shatner , Dr. Who’s Billie Piper, and a group of cast members from the Harry Potter movies — are scheduled for the Chapin Theater which seats 2,643.

In Artists’ Alley, visitors can watch artists at work, and purchase original art work.   Panels and workshops are available throughout the weekend, with topics ranging from writing a novel, to making your own costume and props, to a Geeks of Comedy “roast” of Batman.

Billie Piper

On Friday, Billie Piper participated in a Q&A session in the Chapin Theater.

Storm Trooper

Star Wars stormtroopers from the 501st Legion make their own costumes to movie specifications.

About a third of those who attend MegaCon come in costume, and most are happy to pose for photos with other fans. This year, a section in the vendor area is devoted to cosplay. Visitors to that area can learn more about making costumes, purchase clothing, accessories and props, and get advice from experienced cosplayers.

MegaCon continues through Sunday at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando.

Light sabers

The vendor area is a giant sales floor.

In the stocks

Fans come in costume inspired by movies, comic books, video games and books.
